So long from Locavoria
In the spring of 2009 we started Locavoria as a group of friends talking about our shared interest in supporting local foods. We wanted to:
- support local farmers/gardeners/bakers
- have local food that is sustainable and certified organic/or in the process of being certified/or using organic growing methods
- access local food from the Edmonton area outside of the market hours
- buy from farmers whose products aren’t readily available.
At the time, accessing local foods in Edmonton was a struggle. Finding organic foods - even more so. There were only a few farmer's markets and they were only open one day a week. Now, six years later, there are at least a dozen in Edmonton!
In the beginning we met farmers who were unable to bring their produce to market...well, they were busy producing! We wanted to access their products so we started up a little food buying group.
We are happy to see Edmontonian's enthusiasm has grown for not only farmer's markets but community gardens, urban farmers, hens, bees, backyard gardens and edible front yards. Local restaurants are serving locally sourced foods. Local heritage grass fed beef, free run chickens, free range pork are accessible. And so this finds us feeling pretty confident that you have much better access to local, organic or organically grown produce.
Over the years we have had a wonderful time and met fantastic people. We want to thank you for your support!
